U19s impress in FAW Youth Cup 1st Round.
The under 19s started off their FAW youth cup campaign at Coedpoeth united in what was set to be quite an entertaining game. Coedpoeth went into the game being unbeaten in their respective league and Josh Millingtons side have had a good start to the WPDL.
Due to the unavailability of a majority of his players Josh had the unfortunate task of having to re-shuffle his squad once again. Nath Rennie and Tyler Wilkinson both slotted into FB positions, Alex Buxton took up a central midfield role and Callum Macfarlane played the right side of midfield.
The boys started well getting 3 shots on target within the first 10 minutes with the Coedpoeth keeper pulling off some fine saves. The druids defence weren’t troubled much first half but could not seem to find that killer pass to open the deadlock. A few tweaks half time from the staff and the lads came out a different side.
Ben Dawson produced a fine solo run straight from the kick off and fired the ball low into the bottom corner. Druids didn’t stop there and grabbed their 2nd 2 minutes later through a terrific half volley strike from Alex Buxton. A few minutes of good play and druids added their 3rd through Callum Macfarlane slotting home at the backpost from a Nath Rennie Cross.
The lads contained Coedpoeth up until the 65th minute when Keeper Adam Jones brought down the NO 9 inside his box. The whistle blew to take the penalty and Adam redeemed himself by pulling off a brilliant save. 5 minutes later and centre midfielder Ryan Davies put in a late tackle which seen him receive his 2ndyellow of the day and take an early shower. After the sending off the lads dug in and seen the last 20 minutes of the game out with no real threat.
Managers comments:
I was amazed to see the game went ahead as the pitch was probably around 40% unplayable. It took the first half for us to settle in and get use to feel of the pitch and how the ball travelled on it. We didn’t look like conceding but I was concerned about the chances we had going amiss. At half time me and li (Liam Jones) changed a few things and the lads reacted brilliantly. Daws (Ben Dawson) and Buxt (Alex Buxton) got us off to a great start with two superb strikes. I was chuffed with the 3rd as it was a real team goal. I’m disappointed with Ry (Ryan Davies) as he was excellent all game and then lost his concentration for 2 minutes and put in a silly tackle which sees him miss the next game. Overall im chuffed for the lads and look forward to seeing the draw for the next round.
